Summary of the film Intoxicated by Love
As announced during production and afterward by the media, the film Intoxicated by Love tells the story of the life of Jalal ad-Din Muhammad Rumi, one of the greatest figures of his time, who becomes acquainted with Shams Tabrizi and embarks on a journey of mysticism and spiritual enlightenment. Intoxicated by Love focuses on how these two souls come together and their journey. The screenplay, written by Ehsan Javanmard and Farhad Tavakkol, was created with the help of consultations from prominent scholars of Rumi, such as Dr. Mohammad Ali Mohaqqeq, ensuring that the story stays as true to reality as possible.
The film portrays a period of Rumi and Shams Tabrizi’s lives from 640 to 645 AH, depicting the relationship between Rumi and Shams, Rumi’s deep love for him, Shams’ significant influence on Rumi’s life and poetry, and Rumi’s love for God. In fact, the film shows five years of Rumi’s life, with many key events happening during this time.
Farhad Tavakkol | Writer of Intoxicated by Love
“The essence of this film is Iranian. The writer and director are Iranian, and the creators of the film are Iranian. Even the composer is Iranian. The screenplay is written with an Iranian perspective, and the film explicitly acknowledges Rumi’s Iranian origin. However, since this film is a joint production, we cannot focus on just one market. Rumi holds a special reverence in Turkey, and this film will have a large audience there as well. Therefore, this film is important and appealing to them too. We have no choice but to have an international team and cast. However, the issue is that many people think assigning a role to a Turkish actor means the role is ‘seized.’ When Mustafa Akkad cast Anthony Quinn for the role of Hamza in The Messenger or in Omar Mukhtar, did that mean these characters were ‘seized’ by Anthony Quinn? In those films, the actor was no longer Anthony Quinn, but had transformed into Omar Mukhtar or Hamza.”

Lyrics:
You are my soul and world, what should I do with soul and world?
You are my treasure, what should I do with profit and loss?
One breath is my companion, one breath is my wine,
Since I am ruined in this world, what should I do with the circle of time?
You are my soul and world, what should I do with soul and world?
You are my treasure, what should I do with profit and loss?
How sweet is love, how intoxicating, with a cup in hand,
How fortunate is the place where you sit, how fortunate is that view of the soul.
From you, every particle is a world, from you, every drop is like a cup,
When from you I found a sign, what should I do with name and identity?
I was dead, then became alive, I was crying, then I laughed,
The fortune of love came and I became immortal.
I fled from all creatures, I was freed from all,
Neither hidden nor apparent, what should I do with being and place?
From your union, I am intoxicated, I have no care for creation,
Since I am caught and hunted by you, what can the bow and arrow do?
