Jon Landau, the Oscar-winning producer of Avatar and Titanic, passed away at the age of 63.

According to cinemadrame, Jon Landau, the producer of Avatar and Titanic, which were the highest-grossing films of their time, passed away on July 5 at the age of 63. Landau’s filmography also includes Avatar: The Way of Water, Alita: Battle Angel, and Solaris. His passing was first announced by Titanic actress Frances Fisher.

Born in New York, Landau collaborated with James Cameron for nearly three decades. He began his filmmaking career as a project manager with Key Exchange (1985) and F/X (1986). As a producer, he debuted with Campus Man (1987) and later Honey, I Shrunk the Kids (1989). In the following years, he produced films such as Home Alone, Mrs. Doubtfire, Speed, and Cameron’s True Lies.

In February, Landau spoke to Deadline about his first collaboration with Cameron, saying: “I think Jim was a bit hesitant. He said, ‘They say we’re going to be great friends. Or maybe not.’”

Many Hollywood celebrities, including Kate Winslet, Cameron, and others, have reacted to Landau’s passing. Cameron wrote, “His legacy is not just the films he produced but the personal example he set—determined, kind, collaborative, tireless, insightful, and utterly unique. He made great movies, not with power but by spreading warmth and the joy of filmmaking. He inspired all of us to be our best every day. I’ve lost a dear friend with whom I shared a 31-year close collaboration. A part of me is gone.”

Winslet commented, “Jon Landau was one of the kindest and best people. He was full of love, nurturing and supporting creative teams. His strength in life lay in knowing the importance of family, both at home and at work. He was full of smiles and gratitude. I can’t believe I’m writing this, can’t believe he’s gone.”

Zoe Saldana wrote on Instagram, “Finding the words in moments like these is difficult. Losing you is a heavy blow. Your wisdom and support shaped many of us in ways we will always be grateful for. Your legacy will continue to inspire and guide us along this journey. Rest in peace, dear Jon. We will miss you dearly.”

Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, the director and writer of The Lord of the Rings, whose Weta FX company collaborated with Landau, issued a joint statement honoring him: “On behalf of everyone at Weta FX, we say we are heartbroken by Jon Landau’s passing. Jon was not only a lasting figure in the film industry but also a valued colleague and friend.”
