“The Final Nail in the Coffin of Superhero Cinema”; One “Superman” Review Leaks Prematurely
According to cinemadrame news agency, one review for James Gunn’s “Superman,” which he wrote and directed, was mistakenly published. Reviews for this superhero film are not allowed to be released for another five days, but The Daily Beast inadvertently published its review and removed it after a few minutes.
Nick Schager, a critic for the publication, titled his review: “The Disastrous New ‘Superman’ Is The Final Nail In The Coffin For Superhero Cinema.”
This single sentence seems sufficient to alarm and anger Warner Bros.’ marketing team, especially in an era where reviews often determine a film’s box office performance. However, other parts of the review have leaked on social media and are as follows:
The critic writes in one section of the review: “Just as the seemingly invincible Man of Steel is weakened and brought to ruin by Kryptonite, the once-invincible superhero genre is gravely imperiled by audience fatigue.”
He adds that this film’s reboot is “the exact opposite of Zack Snyder’s grim films” in tone and narrative, resulting in something reminiscent of “Saturday morning cartoons.” The critic writes that Gunn’s Superman is not a messianic figure but instead a man who is “charming and genuinely benevolent,” uses the word “fella,” and believes that “‘punk rock’ means seeing beauty in everyone.”
In this 122-minute superhero film, David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan will star as Superman and Lois Lane, respectively. Nicholas Hoult will play the supervillain Lex Luthor, Anthony Carrigan, star of the series “Barry,” will play the DC archaeologist Metamorpho, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, a writer for The Daily Planet, and Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern.
The film “Superman” is set to be released on July 11, 2025, and aims for a $100 million opening week.
