Alice Rohrwacher to Direct a Silent Film After “La Chimera”

According to Cinemadrame News Agency, Alice Rohrwacher is set to direct a silent film following her critically acclaimed movie, “La Chimera.” The Italian filmmaker confirmed in an interview with Bologna’s Cinema Modernissimo that she aims to rediscover the magic of cinema amidst the commotion of cinematic blockbusters.
She describes this upcoming film as both personal and experimental, stating: “It’s a film that is very important to me. The goal is to create an opera where the music constitutes the film’s sound.”
Rohrwacher views silent cinema not as a museum piece, but as a living language with untapped potential: “It’s not pretentious, but rather comes from a deep belief in the power of [silent cinema’s] communication as a form of experience that should continue and coexist alongside talking cinema. Silent cinema demands precise attention. You shouldn’t do anything else but watch the film. It forces you to fully focus on the image.”
The director of “Happy as Lazzaro” also noted that silent films often featured symbolic and poetic colors: “You have to find the color.”
