“Quiet Desperation” is a collection of memoirs from an American intelligence agency (CIA) operative’s decades of activity in various countries around the world, including Iran. Interestingly, his tenure in Iran coincided with the most significant event in Tehran-Washington diplomatic relations: the capture of the US embassy (the “Den of Espionage”).
Thomas Ahern Jr., a CIA operations officer in Iran, was among the Americans held hostage at the embassy and spent all 444 days in captivity without his identity being revealed.
Years after this event, Ahern Jr. revealed his identity and began to recount his experiences working in East Asian and Middle Eastern countries, including Iran.
His notes from this historical period, as well as what he has written about his service in other countries, provide first-hand and fascinating information from the perspective of a CIA operations officer regarding these countries and their political and social developments during a specific era.
The book has been translated by Parnaz Talebi, who previously translated “The Informers” by Joel Whitney, a book about the CIA’s misuse of renowned world authors to counter leftist and communist ideologies.
