Anthony Carrigan: My Alopecia Is My Superpower

According to CinemaDrame news agency, Anthony Carrigan, who plays Metamorpho in the film “Superman,” says he considers his alopecia to be his superpower. The 42-year-old actor, known for his roles in “Gotham” and “Barry,” revealed in an interview with Stephen Colbert that he’s suffered from alopecia—a condition that causes hair loss—for most of his life.
Carrigan addressed how he entered an industry where physical appearance is often paramount: “Naturally, I didn’t take the normal path. Because when I got it—I got it when I was a kid—I hid it because at the time it was just patches. So it started as something I hid and was ashamed of. I didn’t want anyone to know I had alopecia.”

He continued: “Then I got into the film industry—obviously the right choice for me—but eventually I got to a point where I was told, ‘You’ll never act again… You’re not attractive anymore, you need to quit.’ And that was at a time when my hair was really starting to fall out. That’s when I found something within myself—a kind of self-acceptance—that I didn’t have as a kid. And now it’s like my superpower.”
The character Metamorpho, created in 1965 by Bob Haney and Ramona Fradon, can transform elements of his body into different forms. In DC comic books, he becomes a detective and forms a superhero team called the Outsiders.
The film “Superman” has surpassed $330 million in global box office revenue in its second week of release. Carrigan will also appear in the second season of the series “Twisted Metal” on Peacock in late July.
