Benedict Cumberbatch: The Wastefulness of the Film Industry Is Disgusting

According to CinemaDrame news agency, In a recent interview on the “Table 4 Rudy” podcast, Benedict Cumberbatch criticized the inherently wasteful nature of the film industry, revealing that while playing Marvel’s Doctor Strange, he had to eat five meals a day.

The Sherlock actor said, “Eating beyond hunger is terrible. I thought about responsibility, prudence, and sustainability, and I asked myself, ‘What am I doing? With this amount of food, you could feed a family.’”

Cumberbatch described his snacks as boiled eggs, biscuits, and cheese: “This industry is disgustingly wasteful… Think about the equipment used to create a scene that won’t be recycled, transportation, catering, housing, as well as lighting and energy.”

The 49-year-old added that the “excessive” nature of filmmaking often leads to actors being accused of pretentiousness. Having previously stated he would not reprise Doctor Strange in Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday, he said that as a producer at his SunnyMarch production company, he strives to promote a “green” approach.

Cumberbatch shared that he has made a “gentleman’s decision” to ban single-use plastics on set: “There’s no need to hand out plastic bottles to the crew. If you were out in the wilderness and couldn’t bring glass bottles, that’s understandable. But we are in the 21st century.”

This week, it was announced that Benedict Cumberbatch will receive the honorary “Golden Eye” award at the Zurich Film Festival on September 29 and will participate in a masterclass.
