Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle Breaks Records in Japan

According to CinemaDrame news agency, The anime Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle made history just hours after its release in Japan, setting multiple new records. Premiering last Friday, the sequel earned $11.1 million (1.65 billion yen) from 1.16 million tickets sold, breaking the record for the highest single-day box office in Japanese cinema history.

From Friday to Sunday, the new Demon Slayer film grossed $37.3 million, and by Monday—a national holiday in Japan—it had reached $49.4 million, setting a new record for the country’s weekend box office. The film also broke IMAX records, earning $3.5 million across 59 IMAX theaters by Monday—marking the biggest IMAX opening in Japanese cinema to date. The film’s average gross per theater is around $48,000.

These milestones recall the success of Demon Slayer: Mugen Train in 2020, which grossed over $365 million (40 billion yen) despite the constraints of the COVID-19 pandemic, becoming the highest-grossing film in Japanese history. Infinity Castle’s three-day total is approximately 19% higher than Mugen Train‘s, suggesting it may go on to break even more records in the coming weeks.

Infinity Castle, directed by Haruo Sotozaki and produced by Ufotable, adapts the final arc of Koyoharu Gotouge’s best-selling manga. The voice cast includes Natsuki Hanae as Tanjiro, Akari Kito as Nezuko, Hiro Shimono as Zenitsu, and Yoshitsugu Matsuoka as Inosuke.

The Hollywood Reporter notes that these record-breaking numbers come amid a broader shift in Japan’s film industry toward domestic productions, particularly anime. Japanese films reached a total box office of $1.01 billion (155.8 billion yen) in 2024, accounting for 75% of the market.

International distribution of the film will begin on September 12, 2025.
