Barbarian Director Says His Resident Evil Adaptation Won’t Be “Faithful”

According to cinemadrame News Agency, Zach Cregger stated in a new interview with SFX Magazine that his adaptation of the Resident Evil video games will not be “faithful.” The director of Barbarian will soon have his film Weapons in theaters, and Sony Pictures selected him last year to reboot Resident Evil.
Cregger emphasized that he is a fan of the video games but does not feel obligated to solely satisfy fans: “I’m a huge fan of the Resident Evil games. I’ve played them all. I don’t know how many times I’ve started [the fourth installment of the game] over and over again. I love it. I’m definitely not trying to be entirely subservient to the games’ narrative world. I’m trying to tell a story that feels as authentic as the experience you had playing the games. I don’t think I’m breaking any major rules, but on the other hand, I know that no matter what I make, people will come after me online.”
He added: “So I just want to make a good movie and tell a story that’s engaging. I know I’ll be satisfied with the film, and I hope people will be satisfied too.”
Daniel Richtman recently reported that Austin Abrams, known for Wolfs and Euphoria, will play a new character named Brian in the film.
Resident Evil, directed by Zach Cregger, is scheduled for release on September 18, 2026.
