Charlize Theron and Channing Tatum Join the Film Dance Parents

According to CinemaDrame News Agency, following audience enthusiasm for comedies such as “Happy Gilmore 2” on Netflix and “The Naked Gun” in theaters, the comedy genre has been revitalized, and Hollywood studios are showing more willingness to greenlight films in this category. Deadline reports that one such project is the family comedy “Dance Parents,” starring Charlize Theron and Channing Tatum, which has sparked intense competition among studios, but Universal ultimately acquired the distribution rights.
Jonathan Levine will direct and produce the project, and Megan Malloy is writing the screenplay. Theron and Levine previously collaborated on the 2019 political comedy “Long Shot.”
Details of the film’s plot remain under wraps, but the title suggests Theron and Tatum may play dancer parents or parents of young dancers. Dance is hardly unfamiliar territory for Tatum, who rose to fame with “Step Up” and played a dancer in the “Magic Mike” films. Theron and Tatum also shared a dance moment together onstage at the 2013 Oscars ceremony.
Theron is producing the film through her company, Denver & Delilah, which has a deal with Universal Pictures. Tatum is also producing via his company, Free Association.
Free Association recently produced Zoë Kravitz’s feature directorial debut “Blink Twice,” as well as MGM’s “Dog,” starring Tatum. “Dog” was a box office surprise during the COVID-19 pandemic, grossing over $85 million on a $15 million budget.
Levine recently completed the sports film “Mr. Irrelevant,” starring David Corenswet—the new Superman. Malloy’s writing credits include the Oscar-winning “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” and Sony Pictures Animation’s “Vivo.”
