Donald Trump ‘Delighted’ by Sydney Sweeney’s Republican Affiliation

Commenting on her American Eagle ad campaign, he wrote: “Sydney Sweeney, who is registered to vote as a Republican, has the ‘hottest’ ad out there. It’s for American Eagle, and their jeans are selling really well. Keep it up, Sydney!”

Earlier: Former President Donald Trump joined a wave of Republicans praising Sydney Sweeney’s campaign for American Eagle jeans. Speaking to reporters in Pennsylvania this Sunday, he said he was “happy” to learn that the 27-year-old Euphoria actress is a Republican.

Trump said: “She’s registered as a Republican? Now I like her ad [for American Eagle jeans] even more. It’s amazing how many people are Republicans. I didn’t know about this, but I’m glad you told me.”

Last week, documents surfaced showing that Sweeney identified as a Republican when registering to vote in June of last year—a fact verified by several outlets.

Trump added: “If Sydney Sweeney is registered as a Republican, I think her ads are fantastic!”

However, many liberals have taken a different view of the American Eagle jeans ads, criticizing the wordplay between “genes” and “jeans” and the slogan “Sydney Sweeney’s jeans are great”—a phrase that phonetically resembles “Sydney Sweeney’s genes are great”—as racist.

Conversely, many conservative figures have voiced their support for the campaign and mocked the backlash. J.D. Vance, Trump’s vice-presidential running mate, previously said: “My political advice to Democrats is to keep doing what they’re doing and keep telling everyone that if you find Sydney Sweeney attractive, you’re a Nazi. That seems to be their strategy.”

Vance added: “They’re just trying to sell jeans to young Americans, but [the Democrats] are losing their minds over it. I wonder—haven’t you learned anything from the November 2024 election?”

Sweeney has not responded to the controversy, but last Friday, American Eagle released a statement: “‘Sydney Sweeney’s jeans are great’ has always been about jeans and always will be. Your jeans. Your interpretation. Good jeans make everyone look good.”
