Filming Begins on “Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping”

According to CinemaDrame News Agency, Lionsgate Studios has confirmed via a social media video that filming for The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping has begun in Spain. The sixth installment of the franchise is scheduled for release in fall next year.

Sunrise on the Reaping will open with the 50th Hunger Games and follows 16-year-old Haymitch Abernathy, set 24 years before the events of the first film. This character later becomes the mentor to Katniss and Peeta in the 74th Hunger Games.

The cast includes Elle Fanning as Effie Trinket, Ralph Fiennes as President Crassus Snow, Joseph Zada as Haymitch Abernathy, Kieran Culkin as Caesar Flickerman (host of the Games), Whitney Peak as Lenore Dovebird, Mckenna Grace as Maysilee Donner, Jesse Plemons as Plutarch Heavensbee, Maya Hawke as Wiress, Lili Taylor as Mags, Ben Wang as Wyatt Callow, and Kelvin Harrison Jr. as Beetee.

Francis Lawrence returns to direct Sunrise on the Reaping, marking his fifth time helming a film in the franchise. The screenplay for this prequel, based on Suzanne Collins’s new novel, is being written by Billy Ray.

Lionsgate will release The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping on November 20, 2026.
