First Trailer for Eleanor the Great, Directed by Scarlett Johansson

According to CinemaDrame News Agency, Sony Pictures Classics has released the first trailer for Eleanor the Great, directed by Scarlett Johansson. The film, which first screened in the “Un Certain Regard” section at the Cannes Film Festival, will be shown at the Toronto International Film Festival this September.

June Squibb, the Oscar-nominated star of Nebraska, Chiwetel Ejiofor, veteran actress Jessica Hecht, and Erin Kellyman appear in Johansson’s feature directorial debut. The story follows Eleanor Morgenstein (played by Squibb), a 90-year-old woman trying to rebuild her life after the death of her best friend, who returns to New York City after decades of living in Florida. Tony Cámn, also making his feature debut, wrote the screenplay.

Johansson previously told The Hollywood Reporter about the project:

“It would have been much easier to star in a $180 million sequel or a genre film below standard. Getting paid way, way, way less for an independent film with an original story — where the lead actor is 94 years old — is incredibly, incredibly challenging. Every single day, the film would fall apart in 400 different ways.”

Eleanor the Great will open in U.S. theaters on September 26.
