Happy Gilmore 2 Breaks Records in Its First Week

According to Cinemadrame News Agency, Happy Gilmore 2, starring Adam Sandler, has topped the list of the week’s most-watched films on Netflix and broke records with 46.7 million viewers in its first three days of release. Netflix calculates “viewers” by dividing total hours watched by the film’s runtime.

Based on this metric, Happy Gilmore 2 recorded the most-watched opening weekend in Netflix’s history in the U.S. for a feature film. Sandler has previously released Murder Mystery, Hubie Halloween, and The Week Of on Netflix.

The release of this sequel also led to a surge in viewership for the original film, which premiered three decades ago and reached third place among the week’s most-watched movies with 11.4 million viewers.

In Happy Gilmore, Sandler plays a hockey player who cannot control his anger and discovers his other talent—golf. He joins a golf tournament in hopes of winning and saving his grandmother’s house. In the competition, Gilmore faces a boastful athlete named Shooter McGavin, played by Christopher McDonald. Julie Bowen and Carl Weathers were also among the cast.

Julie Bowen and Christopher McDonald return to their previous roles in the sequel, while Bad Bunny, Margaret Qualley, Nick Swardson, Travis Kelce, Scott Mescudi, and Benny Safdie (director of Uncut Gems) join the film as new cast members.

The film KPop Demon Hunters ranked second among Netflix’s most-watched films of the week with 26.3 million viewers, while in the television category, the series Untamed (starring Eric Bana), which was greenlit for a second season yesterday, held the top spot for a second consecutive week with 26.1 million viewers.
