James Gunn Confirms Superman “Sequel” in the Works: “It’s Not ‘Superman 2’”

According to Cinemadrame News Agency, James Gunn has confirmed on the social network Threads that he is writing the script for a sequel to Superman. Responding to a fan who asked what projects he was working on, the filmmaker said, “Press tour for Peacemaker and writing a sequel!” When another user asked, “When are you going to promise a sequel?” Gunn replied, “Just did!”

Following The Batman, this film has become the first DC title in three years to cross the $300 million domestic box office mark. Earlier, Superman surpassed $292 million, breaking the record set by Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel.

Gunn had previously denied Jeff Sneider’s report about a script for Superman 2, but it now appears that after the release of the first film and the filming of Supergirl, he is ready to write the sequel. In past comments that left fans confused, Gunn had said that the Superman character played by David Corenswet would have a key role in another DC Studios film, but clarified that it was not “Superman 2” or “Batman v Superman.”

Yesterday, when a Threads user said they were a bit confused and asked if he was referring to the same sequel that he previously stated was not “Superman 2,” Gunn responded: “Yes, yes, sorry. It’s the same movie. Superman plays a major role in it. It’s not ‘Superman 2.’”

DC will begin filming Clayface in September and plans to release Supergirl next summer. Another upcoming project from the studio is a reboot of Wonder Woman.

David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan play Superman and Lois Lane, respectively, in Superman. The cast also includes Nicholas Hoult as the supervillain Lex Luthor, Anthony Carrigan (star of Barry) as Metamorpho, the DC Universe archaeologist; Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen; Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher; Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl; Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific; María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer; Wendell Pierce as Daily Planet editor Perry White; and Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern.

This week it was announced that the digital release of Superman will be available on August 15, just 35 days after its theatrical debut.
