James Gunn’s Superman Becomes the Highest-Grossing Superman Film in U.S. Box Office History, Surpassing Man of Steel

According to Cinemadrame News Agency, Superman directed by James Gunn has surpassed Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel to become the highest-grossing Superman film in U.S. box office history. The film has recently crossed $292 million in U.S. sales, surpassing Man of Steel, which grossed $291 million domestically in 2013. Adjusted for inflation, Man of Steel’s U.S. gross would be equivalent to $407 million today.
Gunn’s Superman has surpassed $500 million worldwide in just 18 days and may potentially break Man of Steel’s $670 million global record, though Forbes considers this unlikely. The film has not met expectations in international markets, which Gunn attributes to “anti-American” sentiment in certain countries, including China.
The director previously told Rolling Stone:
“Without a doubt, we have performed better in domestic markets than internationally, but even in those overseas markets, sales are increasing and we’re seeing really strong daily numbers. So clearly, word-of-mouth is positive both here and abroad, which is what we need most. But in some countries like Brazil and the UK, we’ve done very well. In some countries, Superman isn’t as well-known a superhero as, say, Batman. That affects some things. Globally, a certain amount of anti-American sentiment has emerged. That doesn’t help us.”
In this 122-minute superhero film, David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan star as “Superman” and “Lois Lane,” Nicholas Hoult plays the supervillain “Lex Luthor,” Anthony Carrigan (star of Barry) appears as “Metamorpho,” the DC universe archaeologist, Skyler Gisondo as “Jimmy Olsen,” Sara Sampaio as “Eve Teschmacher,” Isabela Merced as “Hawkgirl,” Edi Gathegi as “Mister Terrific,” María Gabriela de Faría as “The Engineer,” Wendell Pierce as “Perry White,” the Daily Planet editor, and Nathan Fillion as “Green Lantern.”
