Family and friends of this famous Iranian poet have reported that his health condition is critical.

Mohammad Ali Behmani, an Iranian poet and ghazal writer, was born in Dezful. He spent his childhood and adolescence in Tehran, Karaj, and Bandar Abbas.

His mother was one of the first students in Iran to learn the French language. She was also familiar with Arabic and French. When all the children gathered together, she either read from the Shahnameh or recited the works of Hafez and Saadi. His father sent him to a printing house instead of school. At the age of 10, he began working at the Taban printing house.

Fereydoun Moshiri was the first to recognize Mohammad Ali Behmani’s poetic abilities, and Behmani wrote his first poem at the age of 10 for his mother. The Roushan Fekr magazine published it in 1952.

Mohammad Ali Behmani started his collaboration with radio in 1966 and presented the “Page of Poetry” program in collaboration with the Khaleej Fars provincial network.

He moved to Bandar Abbas in 1973 and after the victory of the revolution, returned to Tehran. In 1984, he moved back to Bandar Abbas, where he currently resides.

He is one of the most talented and influential lyricists of this era and has collaborated with many artists in the music industry, including the late Nasser Abdollahi.

Mohammad Ali Behmani’s first collection, titled Bagh-e Lal (The Garden of Silence), was published by Bamdad Publications in 1972. Following this, many of his works reached his audience. Two collections, Gahi Delam Baraye Khodam Tang Mishavad (Sometimes I Miss Myself) and Sha’ere Sheneedani Ast (The Poet is Listenable), are among the most famous works in Behmani’s career and have reached their tenth edition. In 1999, Behmani was named a “Sample Ghazal Poet” of the country, and in 2006, he, along with Hossein Monzavi, was chosen as the winner of the classical poetry section at the first Fajr Poetry Festival and was also listed among the Immortal Figures of Poetry.

Among Behmani’s works, Gahi Delam Baraye Khodam Tang Mishavad is undoubtedly a highly influential collection in the development of contemporary ghazal.

Love is one of the key themes in his ghazals. Many believe that his ghazals are influenced by the style and approach of Nima Yushij. As he himself says, “My body is a ghazal, but my soul is entirely Nimaian. In the mirror, the fusion of these two faces is a spectacle.”
