New Superman Record: First Superman Film to Reach $300 Million in the US
According to Cinemadrame News Agency, Superman, written and directed by James Gunn, has surpassed $300 million at the domestic box office. No previous cinematic adaptation of the character had achieved this milestone in US theaters.
In addition, Superman is now the ninth DC film ever—and the first DC film since The Batman—to gross over $300 million in the US. Prior to Superman, the DC films to cross this threshold were: The Dark Knight (2008) with $534.9 million, The Dark Knight Rises (2012) with $448.1 million, Wonder Woman (2017) with $412.8 million, The Batman (2022) with $369.3 million, Joker (2019) with $335.4 million, Aquaman (2018) with $335.1 million, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) with $330.3 million, and Suicide Squad (2016) with $325.1 million.
Man of Steel, directed by Zack Snyder in 2013, grossed over $291 million, while Justice League (2017) earned more than $229 million. The new Superman, starring David Corenswet, reached the $300 million mark after just twenty-one days in theaters.
Elsewhere, the horror film Together, starring Dave Franco and Alison Brie, opened yesterday with $2.65 million, of which $1.3 million came from previews. Neon acquired the film—written and directed by Michael Shanks—at the Sundance Film Festival for $16 million. Together is expected to gross $8–10 million in its first five days. By comparison, Ari Aster’s Midsommar took in $3 million in its first three days and $10.9 million in five days before the COVID-19 pandemic, with a total gross of $27.4 million. Both films received a CinemaScore of C+, but Shanks’ film currently holds a higher Rotten Tomatoes score of 94%, compared to Midsommar’s 83%.
Other films in the US market this holiday weekend include The Fantastic Four: First Steps, which is expected to reach $45–47 million in its second week; DreamWorks Animation and Universal’s The Bad Guys 2, targeting $20 million; and Paramount’s remake of The Naked Gun, which is aiming for a $15 million debut.
