Passion of the Christ Sequel to Be Split Into Two Films

According to CinemaDrame News Agency, The Resurrection of the Christ, directed by Mel Gibson and serving as a sequel to The Passion of the Christ, will be divided into two films. Lionsgate Studios announced this Tuesday that Part One of The Resurrection of the Christ will be released on Good Friday, March 26, 2027, with Part Two set to follow forty days later on Ascension Day, Thursday, May 6, 2027.

On the release date of Part One, the only other scheduled film is an untitled project from Warner Bros. Part Two, meanwhile, will premiere alongside Sony’s cinematic adaptation of the video game The Legend of Zelda.

Gibson chose the title The Resurrection in 2016, explaining: “The film does not follow the strict chronological order of historical events. We don’t really know what happened during those three days, but it’s worth contemplating and imagining.”

The original film, starring Jim Caviezel as Jesus Christ, depicted the last twelve hours of Christ’s life. Produced on a $30 million budget, it grossed $612 million worldwide and became the highest-grossing R-rated film in U.S. history. It was nominated for Academy Awards for Best Makeup, Best Cinematography, and Best Original Score.

Gibson previously directed Hacksaw Ridge and Flight Risk for Lionsgate, which has also distributed Icon Productions’ films including The Passion of the Christ.

Jim Caviezel is expected to reprise his role as Jesus Christ in the sequel, with Monica Bellucci returning as Mary Magdalene.
