Sequel to Romantic Comedy My Best Friend’s Wedding in the Works

According to CinemaDrame News Agency, a sequel to the romantic comedy My Best Friend’s Wedding is in development. Variety has reported that Celine Song, director of Past Lives and Materialists, is writing the script for the project.

Dermot Mulroney, one of the stars of the 1997 original, confirmed several weeks ago that “discussions” about a sequel were underway. He told the New York Post: “I have no information. The last thing I heard, and I quote: ‘The lawyers are talking.’”

In the original film, Julia Roberts played a food critic named Julianne who realizes she is in love with her friend Michael, played by Dermot Mulroney. When she learns that Michael is about to marry his new girlfriend Kimberly, played by Cameron Diaz, she attempts to stop the wedding at any cost.

The film grossed nearly $300 million worldwide and was nominated for three Golden Globe awards, including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.

Roberts has previously said she would be willing to reprise the role of Julianne: “I think Kimmy and Michael got married and maybe they have children by now.”

This sequel joins a wave of 1990s cult classics being revived. In July this year, both I Know What You Did Last Summer and Happy Gilmore 2, starring Adam Sandler, were released.
