Shrek 5 postponed to summer 2027

According to CinemaDrame News Agency, Shrek 5 will now be released in the summer of 2027 instead of December 2026. DreamWorks and Illumination Studios announced this Monday that the fifth installment of Shrek will be delayed by six months, with its new release date set for June 30, 2027. This means there will be nearly a 17-year gap between the fourth film (Shrek Forever After) and the fifth.

Mike Myers will return as Shrek, Eddie Murphy as Donkey, Cameron Diaz as Princess Fiona, Jon Hamm as Brogan the ogre, Jane Lynch as Gretchen the ogre, Craig Robinson as Cookie, Walt Dohrn as Rumpelstiltskin, Julie Andrews as Queen Lillian, John Cleese as King Harold, and John Lithgow. Zendaya joins the cast as the voice of Felicia, Shrek’s daughter, in multiple roles.

The film is directed by Walt Dohrn and Conrad Vernon, whose previous credits include Trolls and Shrek 2, respectively. Gina Shay and Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri serve as producers, with Brad Ableson (Minions: The Rise of Gru) as the film’s other director.

The first Shrek won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and grossed over $488 million worldwide in 2001. The second and third films were released in 2004 and 2007, and the fourth in 2010. In 2011, the spin-off Puss in Boots, voiced by Antonio Banderas, was released, followed by Puss in Boots: The Last Wish in December 2022, which grossed $481 million. The four previous Shrek films have collectively sold $2.9 billion worth of tickets worldwide.
