Sinead O’Connor Biopic in the Works

According to CinemaDrame News Agency, a biographical film about Sinead O’Connor is in development. Variety reports that the film will focus on the early years of the Irish musician’s personal life and career. O’Connor passed away two years ago at the age of 56.

The film will be directed by Josephine Decker, creator of Shirley, from a screenplay by Stacey Gregg. Oscar-winning producers Iain Canning and Emile Sherman (The King’s Speech, Lion) of See-Saw Films are producing the project.

O’Connor, considered one of Ireland’s cultural icons, won a Grammy Award for her second album, I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got, which topped the U.S. Billboard charts for six consecutive weeks in 1990. At the time, she became the first woman to win MTV’s Video of the Year award.

Alongside her artistic work, O’Connor was a social and political activist and, in her own words, a “protest singer.” She condemned gender discrimination in the music industry and corruption within the Catholic Church. In 1992, during an appearance on Saturday Night Live, she tore up a photo of Pope John Paul II, and in 2018, she converted to Islam.

The project is being produced by Irish companies A+E Entertainment, known for the acclaimed documentary Nothing Compares; Nine Daughters, known for works such as God’s Creatures and Lady Macbeth; and See-Saw Films, which produced Slow Horses and The Power of the Dog for Apple and Netflix.
