Stephen Colbert Responds to Trump’s Glee Over Late Show Cancellation: “Drop Dead”

According to CinemaDrame news agency, Stephen Colbert fired back at Donald Trump on Monday night after the former president celebrated the cancellation of The Late Show. Reading Trump’s post from Truth Social during the episode, Colbert bluntly responded: “Drop dead.”

Trump had written last week:

“I’m so happy that Colbert got fired. His talent was even lower than his ratings. I hear Jimmy Kimmel is next—he’s even less talented than Colbert! Greg Gutfeld is better than all of them combined, including that dope who ruined the once-great Tonight Show on NBC.”

Colbert shot back: “How dare you, sir. Could an untalented man craft the biting satire I am about to deliver?” He then turned to another camera and, to roaring applause from the audience, said: “Drop dead!”

He also responded to Trump’s prediction that Jimmy Kimmel would be the next to go:

“No! No, no. Not Kimmel. Absolutely not. I am the martyr here, understand? There’s only room for one on this cross.”

Colbert concluded his monologue by referencing the Trump-Epstein connection:

“And the only other story that matters, though barely mentioned: the former president used to hang out with a pedophile.”

CBS announced last Thursday that The Late Show will end in 2026 due to financial reasons. Days earlier, Colbert had criticized Paramount Global’s reported $16 million settlement with Trump—intended to secure approval for its merger with Skydance—as a “big, fat bribe.” Trump, for his part, accused CBS’s 60 Minutes of editing an interview with Kamala Harris to help her in the election.

Monday night’s Late Show featured brief appearances by fellow comedians Jimmy Fallon, Jon Stewart, John Oliver, Seth Meyers, and Adam Sandler.
