The free verse poetry workshop at the Kārnāmeh Institute.

According to Cinemadrame and the public relations announcement of the Kārnāmeh Cultural and Artistic Institute, the “Free Verse Poetry Techniques” workshop titled “From Khusrowani to Today,” led by Hiwa Masih, will be held for 3 months, consisting of 12 two-hour sessions on Sundays from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM.

In this workshop, participants will gradually learn about the history of “weightless” poetry (free verse) or poetry with “internal rhythm,” its difference from “metrical verse,” and the development of free verse poetry from ancient times to Ahmad Shamloo and beyond. The most important aspect of the workshop is learning the technique of “underwriting,” which many poets, even professionals, have neglected, leading to sloppy writing in contemporary poetry. Lack of understanding of styles and methods has led to the collapse of modern poetry after its first and second generations. The goal of this workshop is to guide poets out of confusion by helping them understand the dominant style in contemporary poetry—free verse.

Course Topics:

  1. The history of weightless poetry (free verse) from Khusrowani to today
  2. Free verse techniques that differentiate it from other poetic movements
  3. The most important element of free verse poetry, “underwriting” (which is mistakenly called “scanning”)
  4. Learning the difference between scanning in metrical poetry and editing in modern and free verse poetry, and the techniques involved (from scanning to editing)
  5. Understanding the form, language, beginning, and end of each line, paragraph, line breaks, and punctuation.
  6. Critique and review of students’ poetry in this style.
  7. Understanding free verse poetry in colloquial or popular language.
  8. Assisting in publishing the best poems from this class if they meet the standards of free verse poetry.
