About the theater of the Midnight Library

The play “The Midnight Library,” directed by Mohammad Malek Shahi, is being performed at Malek Theater.

Plot summary: “The Midnight Library” is a loose adaptation of a book of the same name written by Matt Haig, in which a woman, between life and death, searches for the truth of her life.

Parnia Islamiye wrote:

The Midnight Library tells the story of a girl who, in despair and depression, resorts to suicide. In a fictional world and in hope of improving her circumstances and finding joy in her life, she returns to life. My perspective on hope is a Nietzschean one. Hope is the illusion that constantly turns us into passive humans, making us stay in the suffering of life without any effort to improve it. This person is afraid to act, stuck in the crisis. They constantly gaze abstractly at the illusionary and abstract word of hope, believing that perhaps a divine hand will come to rescue them from their misery. Hope leads to missed opportunities and wastes humanity’s most valuable asset: time and life itself. Undoubtedly, Nietzsche is the greatest interpreter of the dangers of hope. He says:

One must experience the most intense nausea and the deadliest suffocation to find change necessary. For someone sinking in the swamp, prescribing hope means dying with a smile, it means surrendering and doing nothing.

You won’t realize until you see the depth of the disaster. Hope for improvement is an excuse for the lazy to do nothing.

Nietzsche says hope deepens pain and suffering, and lengthens the duration of it.

So what should be done? He says: We must learn to face life heroically and joyfully, despite its terrifying structure!

This is where the hero’s journey begins. Now, the role of the hero can be made meaningful in the journey of life.

Instead of passivity and hoping, we should roll up our sleeves, awaken the warrior within, and respond to the call of the journey.

I enjoyed Mohammad Shabanpour’s performance in four different roles and his comedic execution.
