‘Weapons’ Scores $5.7 Million in Thursday Previews

According to CinemaDrame News Agency, Saturday update: Zach Cregger’s Weapons grossed $18.2 million on its opening day, slightly below the $19.2 million debut of Final Destination: Bloodlines and the $20.9 million opening day of Sinners in domestic markets. The film is now tracking toward a $43 million opening weekend.
Nearly 19% of Weapons ticket buyers said they purchased tickets after seeing ads on social media, 17% after watching trailers in theaters, 14% based on recommendations from friends and family, and only 4% due to television ads. Demographically, 45% of the audience is of European descent, 27% Latino, 13% African American, and 9% Asian American.

Disney’s Freakier Friday opened to $12.7 million on its first day and is on track for a $32 million domestic debut. The film earned an “A” CinemaScore, slightly better than the “A–” received by the original 2003 film. Produced on a $45 million budget, the film’s audience is 71% female, with 68% recommending it. The demographic breakdown is 52% European descent, 26% Latino, 9% African American, and 9% Asian American.
In Thursday night previews, Weapons grossed $5.7 million, topping Final Destination: Bloodlines ($5.5M) and Sinners ($4.7M). Current projections suggest it could surpass $50 million by Sunday.
In Weapons, Julia Garner stars as a teacher whose students — except for one — mysteriously leave their beds in the middle of the night and vanish. Josh Brolin plays the parent of one of the missing children, searching for answers. The cast also includes Alden Ehrenreich, Austin Abrams, Cary Christopher, Benedict Wong, and Amy Madigan.
The film received a four-star PostTrak score, with 65% of ticket buyers recommending it. The audience composition is 37% men over 25, 23% women over 25, 23% men under 25, and 17% women under 25. According to Fandango, Weapons is the year’s second-best horror title in advance ticket sales — behind Sinners and ahead of 28 Years Later and Final Destination: Bloodlines. The film holds a 97% critics score and 90% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Freakier Friday, starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan, drew an audience that was 86% general moviegoers, 9% parents, and 6% children under 12. The sequel earned a 4.5-star PostTrak score, with 61% recommending it. Its audience is 71% female, with 47% over the age of 25.
