“Weapons” Targets $40 Million Opening; Second-Best Horror Pre-Seller of 2025

According to CinemaDrame News Agency, Weapons, directed by Zach Cregger, has maintained a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes a week after its first reviews were released. This Tuesday, Deadline reported that the film is expected to gross between $30 and $40 million in its opening week.
Meanwhile, Fandango announced that the film, starring Julia Garner and Josh Brolin, has become the second-best horror film of 2025 in advance ticket sales—behind only Sinners—surpassing 28 Years Later and Final Destination: Bloodlines.
Sinners opened in April with $48 million, while Final Destination: Bloodlines debuted with $51.6 million. Fandango also reports that Weapons is now Zach Cregger’s top pre-selling film, outpacing his 2022 hit Barbarian, which opened to $10.5 million. However, horror films often see sharp declines in box office performance after their first few days.
One advantage for Weapons is its 49 positive reviews and 100% Rotten Tomatoes score, a rare feat to sustain after one week. The film, produced on a $42 million budget, will be released in 3,200 theaters across North America.
Julia Garner stars as a teacher whose entire class—except for one child—disappears after leaving their beds in the middle of the night. Josh Brolin plays the parent of one of the missing children, searching for answers. The cast also includes Alden Ehrenreich, Austin Abrams, Kerri Christopher, Benedict Wong, and Amy Madigan.
Weapons opens August 8.
